Who needs the Badgers, anyway?
By Jeremy & Oliver Richards
"Wear red and white this Friday to support the Badgers. No hats."
This announcement was heard on the P.A. system for the whole week before the big Badger game in Tokyo. Obviously, the administration was trying to invoke a spirited celebration of those darn Badgers and all their success. Unfortunately, by focusing on the Badgers, the administration is overlooking one of the most talented groups of athletes in the world. Right here at West.
We're talking about the Boy's Cross Country (C.C. for short) Team.
Although the Badgers have had a fine season, that is a subjective analysis. Winning nine games isn't so hot, unless you compare it to the last thirty years of crappy Wisconsin football. They are going to the Rose Bowl, but the only reason is because they are historically a much worse team then Ohio State.
On the other hand, here at West we have a fine, fine Cross Country tradition. While the Badgers have been fumbling and bumbling around for the last thirty years, West High has consistently dominated the sport of Cross Country. This continuous mastery by West has culminated in a record-breaking C.C. season.
This fine group of boys managed to win every single Division 1 meet they were entered in. They captured victory at the prestigious Blackhawk Invitational, stomping such powerhouses as Onlaska, Vermouth, and the University of Hawaii. (Yes, Hawaii is ranked as a high school team.) Although the team from Onalaska, seeking revenge, managed to beat West's good ol' boys.
Outside the normal season, the West C.C. Team was successful as well. These local kids ran in the Otearai Invitational in Japan. While the Badgers narrowly squeaked past Michigan State in Tokyo, the strapping young lads from West were shocking professional runners from around the world. Outside the metropolis Fuukuu Yu, the ticklish little munchkins from West slaughtered the likes of Hal Jalikakik, Hugh Jainus, and the entire Kenyan National Team.
It is a sad day, when the administration of our fine school ignores such hard-working, enterprising, (and good looking) young men. It is even more upsetting to see attention being given to those smelly Badgers. At least our coach can run. I'll bet Barry Alvarez can't inject steroids like his team does. So, Libby and the rest of the administration, let's forget the Badgers, it's time to focus on West, let's hear it for school spirit!!
