Poll reveals drug use popular at West
By Nick Coleman and Bennette Burks
During the third week of school, the Liberator staff conducted a survey of West students on the subject of drug use and abuse. The results, frankly, were very surprising, particularly the hard drug statistics. Hard drugs would include cocaine, crack, heroin, or PCP. According to our survey, 8% of West students have tried hard drugs. That is, approximately, one-hundred students when taken in proportion with the entire school population. What's more, 20% of students believe hard drugs are available at West. There may be a few critical readers who doubt these statistics. Consider, however that ten students out of the 146 we surveyed admitted to taking hard drugs.
This is an alarmingly high number in itself.
Another group of statistics that should be noted are the LSD stats.
Compare, for instance, the responses to the dangers of LSD question among all students to those of students who have tried LSD. The majority of students who have actually dropped acid don't believe it's dangerous, while most other students do. Although only 22% of students have tried it, 41%, about twice as many, know how to get it at West.
Despite these results, only 19% of West students believe that drugs are a problem at west. Perhaps this is a combination of clean students who don't know anyone who takes drugs and drug users who are satisfied with the availability of drugs at West.
