Your Turn to Yell
In an effort to inform and enlighten, the Liberator staff recently conducted an informal poll of 104 West High students, regarding various student issues. We attempted to include a broad spectrum of students, but the poll results were weighed in favor of juniors and sophomores. Of 104 respondants, we polled 19 Seniors, 49 Juniors, 30 Sophomores, and 6 Frosh.
What follows is a list of questions and the student body's responces. Totals of under 100% are due to incomplete surveys.
When asked whether or not they were in favor of continuing the 8th Hour program at West, a firm majority agreed 8th should be continued.
Comments included: "I enjoy leaving early," "Less is more when it comes to the amount of time we have to spend here," and, quite simply, "Skip period!"
Should we continue 8th hour? Yes: 56% No: 39%
When we inquired as to whether students found the administration of West satisfactory, opinion was heavily against the administration; though we did not recieve comments on this issue, students we talked to cited the hat ban, the security guards, and the confrontational attitude now taken towards students and teachers by the administration.
Would you rate West's administration as being satisfactory or better? Yes: 33% No: 63%
We also asked students to describe their school spirit, and received mixed results, with an almost an even division between "none," "little," and "some." Only a loyal few (10%) said that they had "a lot" of school spirit.
Opinion on the Liberator was strongly positive! The majority of students said we "kicked ass" or felt "more positively than negatively" about us.
"What's your opinion of the Liberator?"
"The What?": 19%
Hate it: 7%
More negative: 14%
More positive: 20%
"It kicks ass!": 39%
