Selena Roberts' profile of former Olympic champion skier Picabo Street does a more-than-able job of capturing the drama and struggle behind the 30-year-old's effort to come back from a second devastating injury.
But while Roberts succeeds as a journalist, she fails as a human being by failing to point out to Street the danger posed by Street's fiancé, John Mulligan, who first met Street while working as a ski technician for the U.S. team.
"We kept running into each other," Street said. "Finally, he asked, 'Would you like to have a beer with me?' We had a beer, and that's how it started."
Wait, Mulligan just happened to be a ski technician for the U.S. team and he and Street just happened to keep "running into each other?" Like that time Street and Mulligan "ran into each other" at 8 a.m. when Street went to open her window and found Mulligan "cleaning the sill?" Or that time Street was on a date and Mulligan "accidentally" spilled boiling hot coffee all over Street's suitor?
Mulligan is obviously a dangerous stalker, and Roberts' failure to alert Street to that reality shows Roberts is worse than an irresponsible journalist: She's an irresponsible citizen.
